Honda Kei Class Car Collection
Daniel is one bloke I can assure you is not afraid of hard work - and when he sets his mind to something, he makes it happen. The number of vehicles in "the shed" and numerous other examples of Kei Class Honda's parked on his property demonstrate his commitment to preserving the marque, and having a collection that is truly unique! The cars we discuss in what turned out to be my longest ever car interview include...
1. 1972 Z360 Coupe (air cooled and made famous by the film Malcolm)
2. 1969 N600 Delux (air-cooled)
3. 1973 TN360 Truck (air cooled)
4. 1964 T500 Truck (air cooled)
5. 1970 LN360 Station Wagon (air cooled)
6. 1972 LN360 Panel Van (air cooled)
7. 1974 Z360 Hardtop Coupe (water cooled)
8. 1964 S600 Roadster Convertible (twin cam, quad carb, water cooled)
9. 1971 1300 Coupe9 (quad carb, air cooled)
In addition to his Honda collection Daniel also has a stunning Celica RA28 that is the sum of no less than eight separate "donor" cars . And like that car, the fully restored 1973 TN360 took seven vehicles to create the perfect example. While this car is undoubtedly the highlight of the collection given it's restored condition - there are some that will soon take the limelight once they have undergone a similar transformation. While Daniel hedges his bets on which car was his favourite, I came away with the feeling that he has a very soft spot for the 1964 air cooled T500 truck - globally very rare, and heading into the uber-rare category here in Australia.
What a collection. And like the infamous Demtel TV ad - "but wait, there's more!" - Daniel also has some old Landy's awaiting their turn to undergo restoration. Time and the elements got in the way of filming these, but I will be returning to interview Daniel about the Land Rovers as there are another two soon to join his collection. For now, though, I hope Honda Kei class car enthusiasts enjoy my walk around Daniel's garage and are not too upset by my total lack of knowledge when it comes to these historically significant little beasts.
The "Kei car" category was created by the Japanese government in 1949, and the regulations have been revised several times since. These regulations specify a maximum vehicle size, engine capacity, and power output, so that owners may enjoy both tax and insurance benefits. In most rural areas they are also exempted from the requirement to certify that adequate parking is available for the vehicle.

I am always astounded by the lengths car enthusiasts go to to create their perfect set of wheels. This stunning 1977 Toyota Celica is the sum of no less than eight individual cars, all bought and sold with the best parts being used to create one perfect example. Cars sourced all over Australia - some running - some not - but then on-sold to help fund the project. From those eight cars we are le...

This 1937 Morris 25 was converted to MIC 127 Inspection car in 1939 Motor inspection cars were introduced to the South Australian Railways by Commissioner Webb during the 1920s. They were used by managers to visit various country divisions. Paymasters used them as well, to deliver pay packets to construction and maintenance gangs working a long way from home base. As someone who can only afford to admire, and not actually own these precious parts of our motoring history, I will be forever grateful that there are people like Dave who are so wil...

Sensing an opportunity, I was fortunate that Stuart volunteered to bring his car to work and allow me not only to interview him, but to take a ride in the EK. This car really is a beauty, and is suprisingly comfortable to ride in too. When you are use...

The Studebaker Lark ran from 1959 to 1966. From its introduction in early 1959 until 1962, the Lark was a product of the Studebaker-Packard Corporation. In mid-1962, the company dropped "Packard" from its name and reverted to its pre-1954 name, the Studebaker Corporation. In this short ad, we find Wilbur and Mr. Ed discussing the new Lark, after the talking horse had taken one for a test drive....

Running from 1955 thru 1956, the Honeymooners was a relatively short lived sitcom that, over time, became a comedy classic. Many people did not fully appreciate Gleason's comedic genius and the show slipped from #2 to #19 in the ratings, after only 39 episodes had been recorded. Sponsorship of television shows was extremely common back then, and so it was Buick that sponsored the Honeymooners. ...

The 1958 Volkswagen Beetle Ad will have you believe it was only the rear window that was increased in size - but that is not quite correct. The front windscreen was increased by 17% thanks largely to slimmer pillars, while the rear was increased a whopping 45%. There was a flatter registration plate "pocket", shorter grooves for air-cooling of the engine compartment, a new air-cleaner, duct and...

Renault officially revealed the model's existence to the press through L’Auto Journal and L’Action Automobile et Touristique in November 1955, referring to it simply by its unofficial model designation "the 5CV". The Dauphine was, like its predecessor the 4CV, a unibody constructed vehicle. The Dauphine however, was a four door sedan with conventionally opening doors, unlike the "suicide" doors...

Over the 70 years GM built cars in Australia they would upgrade as little as possible to maximise profit. GMs thought they’d get away with the grey motor but Ford and Chrysler had the bigger, more powerful options, hence GM were forced to upgrade the EH with the red motor to compete. The big three of the late 20th Century were all pretty reliable if maintained to spec, because they were so bloody basic little could go wrong. Once Toyota got passed their first few efforts Toyota engineering was superior in comparison to GM, Ford and Chrysler. Why did people keep buying these dinosaurs…the power of marketing and advertising created tribalism.

My first car was an FB wagon. I was told I could have it if I took it away immediately. My brother and I pushed it home about a half mile on gravel wearing thongs. lol I was 14 at the time. My first road car was a FB sedan. I had it backwards down a ditch the first day I got mt license. Got it pulled out by a Torana, oh the shame, and all I had was a cracked taillight. I decided to paint it. I read in the Hot Rod mags that people were giving their cars 12 coats of colour and 4 coats of clear. So ,I did, enamel paint over a 2-hour period, and for some strange reason it ran in curtains and didn't dry for months.😁😁

Blue Streak motor huh ? That was another missed opportunity by BL. This was even used in a couple of prototype MGB 6's before the C was released. A lighter 2.5ltr straight 6 went well in its' role in an MG but BL UK wouldn't wear it. They could've had an excellent engine for many applications in UK models on their books,& eminently tuneable for sports & motorsport. An Australian motor in British cars ? What could have been.........

t is bad to hear the two gentlemen's negative assessment of Lloyd Alexander TS. The model is a 4-stroke engine with front-wheel drive, and not, as stated, a 2-stroke engine with rear-wheel drive. The car was a reliable and economical car, which many Germans and Northern Europeans greatly enjoyed. I was the happy owner of a 25 HP 4 gears Lloyd Alexander TS Kombi while studying at university in the early 70's.

I'm really surprised that all those regulators failed so early. I've owned my 2005 E46 M3 for eight years now and I've never had one window regulator fail on me. I've had a broken window button break because the plastic is not very strong or the design is poor. But that's it. Also the blower motor and regulator for that went on BOTH my E90 335XI and My E46 M3. Replaced them both myself as I do all my own work on those cars.

My first car. I bought it in 1976 for $400. The only real trouble I had was with the CV joints. I wish I still had it. It had more interior space than some 6 cylinder cars I have owned since. This was a heavy car; it was made of steel. Because of its weight it was never going to be a race car but it would sit on highway speeds all day. It was comfortable. The suspension worked as advertised. Oh, it did not like wet weather. Had to keep a can of WD40 in the glove box.

I also love the hydraulic steering. Mine has the purple steering rack. Nice size too. Not too big. I also love the M Sport bumpers. Lovely cars.

I grew up with an EH as the family car, ours had zero nasco and other ehs i knew of were same. Denny Mooney was right. When Holden released the Cruze it took sales away from the Commodore. The Torana would not have saved Holden. The Torana would have cost nearly as much to build as the Commodore yet it could not be sold at the same price for obvious reasons. People just need to accept the fact that Australia is too small of a market for a car manufacturer to justify manufacturing cars here.
